Digi Deep Green Challenge for Change

Week 6 & 7 (14 - 27 December 2009)

Since these few weeks we were quite busy with assignments, projects and attending classes, I forgot to update the blog. Plus, we're still working on the working model....Nothing much to say coz the fabrication of the prototype is in progress. Most of the equipments have been bought and borrowed from the College of Engineering's lab.

For the microhydro project, the team managed to finish the analysis. They're now doing the report.

It's about one month left and we already started panicking. Lets hope everything goes smoothly!!! :-)

Week 5 (7 - 13 December 2009)

We are still working on the design of the working model. especially on the electrical parts. Some modifications are made.

We have also done some research through journals and books as the preparation for the written report which also need to be submitted.

Analysis for Challenge 3 is also in progress.

Not much to say.....Wait for the next week entry!

Week 4 (30 November - 6 December)

We just came back from the Challenge for Change Refresh Session! But not all of us went to the session. Only Cha, Hanif, Onny and Aini. The rest had to do the add-and-drop subjects since we already started our classes this week.

The refresh session gave us a clearer understanding of the judgement criteria, DIGI as a telecommunication service provider, the climate change issues, and etc.

Thanx to DIGI for giving all the information which can be used not only for the competition but also for our future.

Updates on the progress of the project:
1. We had a discussion with the mentors during the Refresh Session. It was great since more and more ideas were obtained during that session.
2. We bought one of the equipments used for the working model from a company which is located in the US. It was kinda difficult to find the equipment in Malaysia. But actually we ordered it from a friend of mine who's staying there. She'll be in Malaysia in 2 weeks time. That means we can save the shipping cost to Malaysia. :) That's important since money is one of the issue in this competition. The more we can save is the better.
3. Some modifications have been made to the design.

Not to forget about the presentation which will be held on February 2010. We will be the last group to present. *** No. 6*** It is good or not?? We'll see.... (^_^)

Week 3 (23 - 29 November 2009)

Challenge 2
Finally, the design was finalized. We also managed to buy some equipments to construct the working model. Some testing were done on the equipments and the data collected will be used for the analysis and comparisons.

Challenge 3
The team managed to create few solutions to increase the efficiency of the microhydro system. They also have started doing the analysis based on the solutions.

Week 2 (16 - 22 November 2009)

SO MANY THINGS TO DO....

Design, material selections, fabrication, analysis, testing, etc...

Hopefully the design is ready by the end of the week, and fabrication can be done ASAP!! Not much time left since our holiday is going to end in a week. It's not easy to gather everyone when the classes start.

This week's progress:

1. Discussion, discussion and lots of discussions.....need to finalize the design ASAP!!

2. We've got permission to use a lab in the college to do fabrication and a room for discussions and equipments storage

3. The microhydro team has started doing the analysis using software and compared few solutions.

4. The solar team went to some shops around Bangi, Kajang, and Kuala Lumpur to survey price of the things to be bought.

5. On Wednesday we had our first meeting with our mentors from DIGI - Wilson, Ivy, and Cheng. Thanx for coming to UNITEN, guys!!! =) We had discussed a lot of things including the technical and also non-technical stuffs. It was great for 'The Origin' to have this session since we had no chance to meet them when we was in Sabah. Our next meeting will be on the 8th of January 2010, and we will also keep in touch via messenger, email and phone.

6. We bought our first equipment to be used in Challenge 2 from an electrical shop somewhere in Kajang.

That is all for this week. Thanx, readers!!! (^_^)

Week 1 (9 - 15 November 2009)

After having 2 weeks exams, we all have to start doing the Challenge for Change projects.

Listed below are some of our activities this week:

  • Meeting with our advisor, Mr Adlansyah.
  • Everyone updates on research done during the final exam weeks.
  • Preparing letters to some individuals asking permission to use room, equipments and etc.
  • Group meeting every day.
  • Preparing the design of the solar energy system.
  • Survey the equipments' cost and availability in Malaysia on the internet and catalogs.

DEEP GREEN CHALLENGE FOR CHANGE - POWERED BY DIGI

The Deep Green Challenge for Change is a competition to discover and showcase energy solutions. Participants will form teams to work on a series of challenges which will focus on energy efficiency solutions for the mobile telecommunications industry, and renewable energy solutions for Malaysian underserved communities. Finalists selected from the first challenge will be provided with seed financing, mentoring and access to relevant partners to design and deliver a proof of concept solution for the remaining two Challenges in the Challenge for Change.

The Challenges are:

Challenge 1 : Energy efficiency for mobile industry – Radio Base Stations (RBS) Cabin Ventilation

-A Challenge where teams will aim to reduce electricity utilization from cooling requirements,
effectively reducing the CO2 footprint but at the same time maintain recommended operating
conditions within the RBS cabin.

Challenge 2 : Application of a renewable energy (RE) solution for underserved communities in Malaysia

-The Objective of this Challenge is to discover innovative Renewable Energy applications viable
for underserved Malaysian Communities.
These can be new applications using a specific RE source or in combination thereof. New
solutions and inventions are also encouraged.

Challenge 3 : Increasing efficiency for existing micro‐hydro projects.

-Teams will be expected to address pre‐determined challenges in an existing community‐based
micro‐hydro project in East Malaysia, addressing areas of energy storage, loads, design and cost
of the existing systems.

This blog contains the progress of The Origin's projects in completing the Challenge for Change.
